LEARN™ is program which invites all students to get involved in undergraduate research, become a part of a supportive learning community, and build the skills for academic and career success. There are two cohorts associated with the program- a freshman cohort and a transfer cohort. In addition, there will be three sections of LEARN, two STEM focussed, and one Arts, Humanities and Business focussed (AHB). Students who are a part of the program will take two classes together, participate in academic, social, and community events, and are actively engaged in undergraduate research (visit learn.fau.edu to find out more about the LEARN™ Program).
The program requires peer mentors for both the freshman and transfer cohort of students for the 2025-2026 academic year. This a paid position. We are seeking students who have research experience.
Eligibility:
- Overall GPA of 3.0 or higher
- One semester or more of undergraduate research experience
- Rising junior or senior (at least 60 credit hours)
- Planning to graduate no earlier than May 2026
Responsibilities:
- Be an ambassador of the Office of Undergraduate Research and Inquiry to the LEARN 2025-2026 cohort of students
- Attend the Peer Mentor Training Sessions (schedule TBA, but will take place in late July)
- Attend the LEARN Student Orientation (date TBA, but will occur during the Summer Showcase in August)
- Mentor a group of freshman or transfer LEARN students by meeting with them to discuss transition to FAU and the overall process of being involved in research for an undergraduate student
- Meet with the LEARN Assistant Director and Program Manager each month to discuss participant success, problems, and programming needs
- Work closely with the LEARN Assistant Director and Program Manager to plan social, academic, and community events for the LEARN students
- Attend and serve as a teaching assistant for the LEARN Introduction to Research courses
- Attend and assist with events throughout the year
- Work with OURI to support the LEARN Program and its mission to increase retention in the student disciplines
